Premise
Encoded Archival Context - Corporate bodies, Persons, and Families ( EAC-CPF) primarily addresses the description of individuals, families and corporate bodies that create, preserve, use and are responsible for and/or associated with records in a variety of ways. EAC-CPF standard is quite different from his relative EAD ( Encoded Archival Description) widely used in archival description, especially because EAC-CPF standard haven't the concept of "inheritance" and is more "data-centric" than EAD. During last summer we have studied long time the xsd schema of the standard to find a way to describe te elements and the relations in another way, using an OWL ontology. The first result was an ontology that describes all the elements and the attributes of the XML schema and refers to tag library and xml diagram for technical specification. This beta version of the ontology is now available as rdf file and as a graph principally to support the archivist's work during the description of individual or organization responsible for the creation, accumulation, or assembly the described materials. This first result was added at the W3C document on vocabulary and dataset used in library and archives of the Library Linked Data working group.Status of This Document
This document explains the EAC-CPF/RDF vocabulary created to define a data model useful to publish archival authority records as Linked Open Data.
EAC-CPF Ontology v. 1.0 for Linked Archival Data
The first work described above was extremely useful as a feasibility study and an effective work tool for archivists, but it could not be used to open the authority records codified with this standard to the world of Linked Open Data. It was necessary to transform the elements of the schema into properties of the ontology and to change the point of view of the description of the model. It was necessary to move from the description of the XSD schema in RDF to the definition of a new model based on the schema (thus maintaining the names of the elements and the attributes).
This new data model keep the main division of the xml schema between the control area and the description area, where control "contains information about identity, creation, maintenance, status, and the rules and authorities used in the composition of the description.", while description "contains the name or names by which the identity is known, and optionally may contain historical context description to facilitate understanding of the identity. The >cpfDescription< includes a required >identity< element containing authorized or parallel name entries and optional >description< and >relations< to provide contextual information for the entity being described, including the relation of the entities to other entities, resources, and functions."
During the elaboration of the ontology we have assumed some general rules:
- the version 1.0 of the ontology is based on the offical standard EAC-CPF, is not an alternative standard, but only a new formalization useful for semantic web initiative and for interoperability;
- to make the RDF model more explicit, the three typologies of entities (that are included in EAC-CPF schemas as control values for <entityType> element), have become three distinct classes in the ontology: Person, Family, and Corporate Body as subclasses of the more general Entity;
- no new concepts have been added that were not defined in the XML schema;
- if the standard proposes the names of the elements in both the singular and the plural form, in the RDF data model only the singular forms have been maintained, since properties can always be repeated in RDF;
- the elements used in the XML schema to parcel the descriptive information were not used in the data model, aiming to group the information favouring a simpler and more general structure. For example, the element <p> present in almost all the descriptive elements was omitted, as well as the formatting elements (such as span, list, item, level, outline, etc.);
- in the RDF file some information, especially classical descriptive metadata such as title, date and author were duplicated by using other RDF terms that are universally known and used such as Dublin Core and FOAF to allow a natural interoperability with other similar resources;
- to improve the linking of external resources and build up the linked archival data, for all those resources for which it was possible to find alternative URIs or alterna-tive information on other websites or with other authorities, the references were added: for example, to link the names of persons to the Virtual International Au-thority File (VIAF), we used a property of OWL owl:sameAs since this indicates that two URI references actually refer to the same thing - the individuals have the same "identity". The same is true for names of places of birth and death, the prop-erty eac:place is not an xml Literal but the URI of a place described in GeoNames database.
